Blistering. If the burn is bad enough, the cells in the dermis (which is below the epidermis, or outermost layer of skin) will become damaged as well, creating a 2nd-degree burn as well as blistering. The purpose of a blister is to create a “protective bubble” around the damaged area, allowing the dermal layer to heal. The fluid within the blister(s) is comprised of plasma (which is the clear portion of our blood) and collects between the two layers of skin, effectively separating the dermis from the epidermis. It’s important to note that blisters can take a full 24 hours to form, which means that you may not know the extent of your burn until it’s too late. It’s also important to note that blistering from sunburn(s) is a definite risk factor for the development of melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Peeling. This would be the healing stage and is when the body attempts to compensate for all of the cells that the burn destroyed by creating new skin. Under normal conditions, it takes approximately 28 days for new skin cells to rise from the basal layer to the top skin layer – at this point, cell death and shedding occurs. However, after a sunburn, the resulting damage accelerates the process and the cells don’t have adequate time to mature and separate before shedding. This means that they stick together and, instead, “shed” as large portions of skin that peels off the body.
