Sports injuries often occur accidentally, but can also be the result of poor training habits and improper gear. Common sports injuries include sprains and strains, shin splints, and knee injuries.

Sports-related injuries are common in the lower extremities. In sports podiatry, the mechanics of the foot (the way we walk, run, etc.) are analyzed and treated to improve lower limb function.

Common sports injuries in the foot and ankle include plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, severs disease, stress fractures, sprains and strains, and bones spurs.

Biomechanics is the study of the body’s movements and physiology, such as how muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments work in conjunction to promote fluid movement of the body’s motions. Understanding biomechanics is vital to diagnosing and repairing injuries in the feet. For instance, biomechanics can help physicians understand why or how an injury occurred, how to improve movement, how to rehab the injury to help the patient heal, and can help athletes understand how they can prevent future injury.

The lower portion of the body takes a beating in every sport. From baseball to football to track to basketball and more, the lower half of the body is used in every movement and is why the most common injuries occur in the legs, feet, and ankles. These injuries are not only limited to sport-specific athletes, but active people who engage in recreational sports or even training, such as weightlifting, CrossFit, running, and active jobs like construction.

If needed, patients can also go through a physical therapy regimen to restore motion and functionality in the area. Our physical therapists will establish a routine, at-home exercise, and discuss ways to prevent future injury.

Procedures performed in our outpatient surgery center include carpal tunnel, ganglion cysts, trigger finger, nail bed repair, toenail repair, tendon repairs, compressive tendinopaties, skin cancers, and more. We do these procedures wide-awake with local anesthetic and no tourniquet. Most surgeries will have you in and out in less than an hour.

Did you know that over 600,000 knee replacements are performed annually in the United States? It’s true. In fact, one of the single most effective ways to reduce severe knee pain – and to restore mobility – is via knee replacement.

The very first knee replacement was completed in 1968 and, since then, vast improvements have been made in both technique and efficacy. Therefore, if nonsurgical treatments such as medications are no longer of use in helping you manage your condition, then a knee replacement might be exactly what you’re looking for. Joint replacement surgery is an extremely safe and effective procedure that allows for the relief of pain, for the correction of any leg deformities, and can help you resume normal, daily activities.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Some of the most common causes of knee pain are arthritis and disability. And, while there are many types of arthritis, the majority of knee pain is due to either osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.


This is an age-related “wear and tear” type of arthritis. It usually occurs in people 50 years of age and older, but may occur in younger people, too. The cartilage that cushions the bones of the knee softens and wears away. The bones then rub against one another, causing knee pain and stiffness.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

This is a disease in which the synovial membrane that surrounds the joint becomes inflamed and thickened. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage and eventually cause cartilage loss, pain, and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of a group of disorders termed “inflammatory arthritis.”

Post-Traumatic Arthritis

This can follow a serious knee injury. Fractures of the bones surrounding the knee or tears of the knee ligaments may damage the articular cartilage over time, causing knee pain and limiting knee function.

So, on to the big question – is total knee replacement for you?

Well, the decision to have a total knee replacement is a decision that you and your surgeon will need to make together. There are several reasons why your orthopaedic surgeon may recommend a knee replacement surgery, including:

  • Severe knee pain or stiffness that limits your everyday activities, including walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs. You may find it hard to walk more than a few blocks without significant pain and you may need to use a cane or walker.
  • Moderate or severe knee pain while resting, either day or night.
  • Chronic knee inflammation and swelling that does not improve with rest or medications.
    Knee deformity — a bowing in or out of your knee.
  • Failure to substantially improve with other treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, lubricating injections, physical therapy, or other surgeries.

Are You a Good Candidate for Knee Replacement Surgery?

While there are recommendations for surgery based on pain and/or disability, there is no specific age – or age limit – when it comes to knee replacements. Nor is there a weight restriction attached to the procedure. A large portion of individuals who opt to undergo total knee replacement are between the ages of 50 and 80, but recent advancements have made the procedure more accessible to younger patients. In fact, there is now something known as a “thirty year knee” that well surpasses the typical 15 year lifespan of traditional knee replacement hardware.

When a hip has been significantly damaged by arthritis, a fracture, or other conditions, a total hip replacement may be considered. In a total hip replacement, the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and then replaced with prosthetic components.

A hip replacement will not completely replace your hip. Like every joint, even a hip replacement can wear down. High-impact activities and being overweight will cause a hip replacement to wear down faster than usual.

Recipients of hip replacements can still remain active through low-impact activities such as golfing, walking, swimming, or hiking. It’s recommended to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle to increase the longevity of the hip replacement

Shoulder replacements are less common than hip and knee replacements, but are just as effective in relieving joint pain. Like other joint replacement surgeries, damaged bone and cartilage are removed and replaced with prosthetic components.

Shoulder replacement consists of removing the damaged parts of the shoulder and replacing them with prosthesis. Treatment may include replacing either just the head of the humerus bone or the head and the socket.

Common symptoms include severe shoulder pain that interferes with daily activities, moderate to severe pain while resting, and a loss of motion and/or weakness in the shoulder. Shoulder replacement is best for people who have failed to meaningfully improve their shoulder pain with other treatments such as medication or physical therapy, and find severe shoulder pain that takes away from their everyday life.

This is an extremely safe and effective procedure that allows for the relief of pain, the correction of any deformities, and can help you resume your normal, daily activities.


While our PT’s are in-network with most local insurance companies, be sure to check with your individual insurance company to determine if POPS PT is in your network and if your policy places restrictions on the number of PT visits per year.

The first session usually lasts about 1 hour. The remaining sessions will average between 30 to 45 minutes. The total amount of sessions you attend, or the length of your entire physical therapy plan, varies based on each individual. Some may heal faster, have a higher pain tolerance, or could have different problems associated with their specific injury.

Regardless, patience is a virtue. Physical therapy takes time and can be painful, but you will improve. Physical therapists have dates in mind, but it’s also a good idea to work with your therapist to schedule goals based on progress – not duration.

You should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing that would make it easy to exercise in. Keep in mind the body part being treated. For example knee patients should bring or wear shorts, shoulder patients should wear loose fitting T-shirts or tank tops to allow access to the shoulder.

As for shoes, wear shoes that offer good support, such as athletic shoes. Avoid heals, flats, sandals, or dress shoes as they do not provide adequate support.

Make sure to pack adequate clothes of you are coming to physical therapy from work. Avoid wearing excessive jewelry and clothes that are too tight and restrict mobility.

We employ only licensed Physical Therapists. Our therapists have over 55 years of experience combined. We occasionally have student interns that will be involved with your treatment. We do not employ physical therapy assistants or aides, therefore all of your treatments will be with one of our licensed physical therapists.

During your first physical therapy appointment, you can expect the therapist to review your medical history and the nature of your injury. Evaluate your range of motion, pain, strength, and functional use of the affected extremity and then make a diagnosis, list of goals and treatment plan. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your specific needs and will likely include a home exercise program or possible follow up appointments if deemed necessary.

This is essentially a get to know you session for both the patient and the physical therapist. The therapist will answer any questions you have—such as the questions on this page. It’s also important to prepare for your visits by writing down specifics on your medical history, especially if you believe it relates to your therapy. In this session, you will receive clear instructions on what they expect of you and what will ultimately get you to the finish line.
